The Wallberg chapel on a green mountain meadow, peaks on the horizon

Wallberg: a day out above Lake Tegernsee

At 1,722 metres, the Wallberg rises high above Lake Tegernsee and draws hikers, cyclists, sledgers and anyone who simply loves the mountains, all year round. The Wallberg cable car takes you up without much effort – and at the top, the view opens out over the surrounding peaks and the lake.

Wallberg in summer: hiking, cycling & paragliding

In summer the Wallberg belongs to hikers, cyclists and paragliders.

Hiking on the Wallberg

The many trails suit beginners and experienced hikers alike. If you would rather not take the cable car, you can walk up:

  • From the valley station to the top station of the Wallberg cable car: the climb takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. With 930 metres of ascent to the summit, it is a demanding tour.

Arriving at the top station by cable car, you will find a wide network of trails of varying difficulty. A few suggestions:

  • A short walk to the Wallberg chapel: only about 5 minutes from the top station, the Wallberg-Kircherl – the mountain’s landmark for 100 years – is reached on a path suitable for pushchairs.
  • Up to the Wallberg summit: the climb to the summit and its cross takes around 30 minutes.
  • Hiking to the Setzberg: in about 1.5 hours from the top station – passing the Berghotel Altes Wallberghaus – you reach the Setzberg. From here the view stretches across the Bavarian Prealps, the Brandenberg Alps with the distinctive Guffert, the Karwendel and the Wetterstein range with the Zugspitze.

Cycling

If you prefer two wheels, you can explore the Wallberg by bike. The area offers routes up and around the mountain, some gentle, some demanding.

Wallberg in winter: sledging, ski touring & winter walks

In winter the Wallberg is a destination for anyone who loves snow.

Sledging on the Wallberg

The Wallberg toboggan run is known far beyond the region. It is 6.5 km long with a drop of 825 metres. Starting at the top station of the cable car at 1,620 metres, it passes the Wallbergmoosalm and runs down to the valley station in Rottach-Egern. The descent takes around 30 minutes, with wide views along the way.

Ski route on the Wallberg

Once a popular ski area, the Wallberg today attracts ski tourers. Although regular lift-served skiing ended long ago, the ski route over the Erlenhang and Glaslhang – formerly a “black” FIS run – draws freeriders and powder skiers. The 3.2 km descent is suitable only for very experienced skiers; less practised skiers can quickly reach their limits here and should take care.

Winter walking

Winter walks let you enjoy the quiet of the season. Prepared paths lead through snowy landscapes and past clear streams, with ever-changing views of the mountains:

  • Winter walk to the Wallberg chapel: an easy walk takes you from the top station to the Wallberg-Kircherl.
  • Wallbergmoosalm circuit: start at the top station and walk through the snow to the Wallbergmoosalm, with views of the Mangfall Mountains along the way. A stop at the Altes Wallberghaus warms you up.
  • Path to the Setzberg: climb the Setzberg for views over the Tegernsee valley and the Alps. The path is manageable in winter too and passes the Altes Wallberghaus – a good place for a break.
